Information on how to take your golf game to a higher level abound all over the place and you have no doubt seen the adverts. You might have even taken the next step and bought those golf balls that promise you 30 yards more distance or the latest driver that powers drives straight down the fairway. So, are you in fact getting those extra yards and accuracy?

If you still believe all the advertising myths from the big golf equipment companies, then it is time to listen up. An all round good golf game is much more than having a good golf swing or owning the latest and greatest titanium driver.

The recreational golfer can sometimes benefit from learning from a good golf swing guide book or by using a specific golf training aid to cure a niggling golf swing fault. At my golf review blog, I have even recommended a few of these guides and products because they can help you with your golf swing. But to get the whole picture of what is needed to dramatically improve, you need to learn the mental game of golf.

Firstly though, in order to dismiss the myths that you can buy a great golf game, let us have a look at the facts:

Back in the 70's, only 25% of golfers had broken 90, and only a small number could shoot in the 70's. Now, 30 years later we have things like the 460cc driver, cavity-back irons, golf clubs with bigger sweet spots, and multi-layered golf balls - as a result, 28% of golfers can now break 90!

Having spent well over 90 billion dollars on development and advertising, the golf equipment industry should be pleased to know that there has been an enormous increase of 3% of golfers that can now break 90! You also have to add to those billions the vast investment made by golf training aids manufacturers and by the golf instruction industry.

It is time to tell you of the missing ingredient that will promote the quickest and the most permanent change to any golfer's game. It is the mental game of golf, sometimes known as the inner game of golf that is the vital key to advancement. Amusingly, it is the one area of golf development which doesn't cost a cent to implement, yet hardly any golfer uses it.

The mental game is using your brain in a calculated, focused and methodical manner and is the surest method to golf improvement and lower scores. It is in fact a large subject and to understand the mental game of golf you need to gain knowledge of things like:

-Using your imagination to win

-Confidence in yourself and your game

-How to control your attention

-Find your game and play within it

-Curing golf nerves and anxiety

-How to develop clear focus and mental toughness

-Eliminate anger from your game

You should by now be thinking about using the mental game of golf in your game; if you understand the significance of it. The top 5% of golfers understand and use the inner game of golf and that is what separates them from us. These top players know all about how to enter the "Zone" by using advanced visualization techniques that improve every area of their game, powerful goal setting processes, and mental imagery processes.

There is no doubt that golf is an intricate game and so there are many areas that you need to perfect and work on. The first thing you need to use is the right (not the most expensive) golf equipment for your game. You can then practice and improve your golf swing technique, and maybe work on your golf fitness training. But if you truly want to take your golf game to the next level and break 90 or even 70, you need to master the mental game of golf.
